Downloading
video
This is for FireFox users, both Windows and Mac. Mozilla FireFox is an excellent, free browser that replaces Explorer or Safari. You don’t have to have FireFox on your school computer, just your home computer. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
The general idea is to find a video
on http://www.youtube.com/ AT HOME, download it to your home computer
and then burn a CD or put the video file on a thumb drive to take to
school and
play for students. You will need about
20 min. the first time to set up the two free download programs on your
home
computer. You will need to install the
VLC player on your school computer. If
you don’t have install privileges at school, think ahead to get
your computer
guru to do it for you. After that
it’s
just a couple of clicks to download from any site.
Firefox
Search for Video downloadHelper and download the plugin for Firefox.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006 Install.
Then go to YouTube site and find a video you want. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw0TikGmVz4 Apocalyptica-Hall of Mountain King.
You don’t have to play it. Up on the Tool bar at the top of the page, go to the Tools drop down menu. Then mouse over DownloadHelper at the bottom. That should bring up another dropdown menu and at the bottom of it should be the name of the video on the YouTube page. Click on the title and it will give you a chance to put the file where you want it. REMEMBER where you put it. Click save.
Now go find VLC player at the website below or search for it. Download and install. You only have to do this step once.

It’s free but it asks you to install ad stuff on the install so click decline after you accept that first screen.
Okay, now go to where you saved the
video
file. Click on it. It
might work at this step but on my machine
it brought up the Flash player and a blank white screen and nothing
happened. Sooooo, If it doesn’t play
automatically
than right click and “open with” and find the VLC program. (Look for the orange clown hat) While
you’re there, check the box that says to always use VLC with this
kind of file!
You will need to have the VLC player on your school machine as well.
Next time you download:
Now when you go to YouTube and find a video you want, Go up to TOOLS and in the dropdown menu select DownloadHelper. In this menu choose the title of the video (always at the bottom). I always pick the flv file but I understand it dosn’t matter which you pick (Utube or .flv). Remember where you put it! Go to the file and drag to a thumb drive or burn to a CD to take to school. Hey, let me know if this works for you.
